Orientation The day begins with an orientation to the boats and gear. We teach you how to sit in a funyak and how to paddle. We stress safety and teach the basics.Flat water Before we move to the whitewater, we warm up on a flat portion of the Ocoee River, where you become intimately acquainted with your funyak, your paddle, and the water. We practice forward and sweep strokes and self-rescue techniques for when you fall out of the boat.Slice and Dice Our first rapid, known as Slice and Dice, is a perfect opportunity for some applied instruction. We teach you to recognize upstream and downstream currents, as well as eddies, holes and hydraulics. Before we even enter the rapid, you will know how to identify and navigate a route through a rapid and avoid potential whitewater hazards. The Ocoee River Finally, its time to get in the water. The first few moments on moving water are akin to learning to walk. There is a very awkward, geeky stage where you may feel like the ugly duckling. The water is more powerful than it looks, and paddling takes more timing. But dont worry; were not leaving just yet. We spend the next half hour learning and practicing ferries. This whitewater technique lets you move around the river freely and gets you used to the river. The next 2½ hours are spent improving technique, running rapids, and enjoying the river. |
